Tour Description
Embark on a transformative journey that delves deep into the heart of Maya civilization, exploring the ancient secrets and cosmic wisdom embedded in their sacred temples and pyramids. This spiritual voyage, inspired by the profound teachings and mystical practices of the Maya, offers a unique blend of ceremonial rites, historical exploration, and personal enlightenment.
Starting in the vibrant city of Merida, our adventure leads us through the acoustic marvels of Edzná and the mysterious symbols of strength at Balamku, each site a portal to the past, inviting us to engage with ancient energies and teachings that have been passed down through generations.
A highlight of our journey will be spending four nights in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, deep in the jungles of the greater Petén Basin region. Calakmul, known as “The Kingdom of the Snake”, was one of the largest and most powerful ancient cities ever uncovered in the Maya lowlands. We will immerse ourselves in the vibrant history and culture of the Maya by visiting the nearby sites of Becan, Kohunlich, Xpujil and Chiccanah.
At Becan, we’ll meander through serpentine paths of knowledge, symbolic of life’s twists and turns, delving into the Maya’s spiritual beliefs and cosmic insights. Kohunlich will captivate us with its Faces of the Sun, resonating with profound energy and spiritual significance. Our adventure then leads us to Xpujil, known for its towering ancient structures that pierce the sky, and Chicanná, famously referred to as “The House of the Mouth of the Serpent”.
At Calakmul we will enjoy a a special Spring Equinox ceremony, where it is said that Kukulkan, the Serpent of Light, descends in perfect balance between day and night. This celestial event symbolizes the awakening of our inner energies and the onset of a new season, offering a profound sense of renewal and harmony as we connect with the cosmic balance of sky and earth.
These sites, distinct in conception and architecture from other vestiges in northern Yucatán, offer conclusive proof of the high culture achieved by the Maya and the diversity of their religious and architectural knowledge. Many of the sites and settlements in this area deviate from the Classic Maya site model, featuring structures like temples-pyramids and ball game courts that are emblematic of official religious life and are generally exclusive to higher-ranking centers. The numerous groups of monumental buildings, and unique architectural and decorative features suggest that this territory was a hub for a great initiation into the cosmos, showcasing the greatness of Maya culture, religion, and wisdom.
Our journey culminates on Tucan Siho Playa, a serene and beautiful beach where we have our Sunset Closing Ceremony to connect us deeply with ancient wisdom and the natural world, providing a meaningful close to our transformative experiences.
This journey is more than an exploration of ancient sites; it is an invitation to experience a profound spiritual awakening, guided by the wisdom of Miguel Angel Vergara and the sacred ceremonies that open our hearts to the lessons of the past. As we traverse this sacred route, we not only uncover the mysteries of the Maya but also embark on a path of personal transformation, culminating in a deep gratitude for the gifts of knowledge, protection, and enlightenment bestowed upon us. This is not just a journey through space, but a journey through time, self, and spirit, connecting us to the universal truths that the Maya have known for centuries
Welcome to the Yucatan Peninsula! Upon your arrival at Merida Airport, our team will be there to greet you and assist with your transfer to the hotel. Sit back, relax, and take in the sights as we make our way to your accommodation in Merida.
After check-in at the hotel, you’ll have the rest of the day to settle in and unwind. Explore the surroundings at your own pace, perhaps taking a stroll through the historic streets of Merida or relax at the hotel.
After breakfast we head to the ancient ceremonial center of Edzná. Known as “The Palace of the Sacred Mantras,” Edzná’s acoustic resonance has been a conduit for Maya priests and priestesses to chant their sacred mantras, connecting with divinities through sound. Our Opening Maya Ceremony at Edzná serves as a bridge between worlds, asking the Guardians of the 4 Cardinal-Points and the Center, for guidance and protection on our journey. Feel free to bring your sacred items for blessing during our Maya ceremonies.
After Edzná, we’ll head to Tucan Siho Playa for reflection and rest. The serene surroundings and beautiful beach offer a peaceful contrast to our spiritual activities, allowing time to absorb the day’s experiences.
We gather for an early breakfast before embarking on a day devoted to exploring ancient wisdom and the natural beauty of the Maya. Our first destination is Balamkú, “The City of the Jaguar Divinity,” where the secrets of the past are whispered by the jungle. Here, the jaguar, revered by the Maya for its strength and as a guardian of sacred knowledge, is symbolized in an impressive stucco frieze, inviting us into a deeper understanding of the universe and our role within it. Here, we can feel the sacred presence of Mother Nature, embodied by Mother Ixchel, a symbol of Life, Fertility, and Abundance all around us.
After our time at Balamkú, we’ll travel to Chicanna Ecovillage, a serene haven that aligns with the principles of sustainability and ecological awareness. Our four night stay here offers an opportunity reflect and connect with nature, to rest and immerse ourselves in the tranquil rhythms of the earth, while visiting the fascinating nearby sacred Mayan sites.
Our day begins with a nourishing breakfast at Chicanna Eco-village, setting the stage for our exploration of the ancient Maya city of Becan, also known as “The Path of the Serpents-Road.” Celebrated for its spiritual depth and pivotal role in deciphering the Maya’s sacred mysteries, Becan acts as a portal to the venerable wisdom of the Maya, anchored in the cosmos’s four foundational pillars: Science, Art, Philosophy, and Spirituality. These principles are in perfect harmony with our inner balance, connecting the Heart of the Sky with the Heart of the Earth.
After lunch, we continue our journey to Xpujil. This site, with its unique architecture and historical importance, stands as a testament to the Maya’s creativity and spiritual depth. As we wander through the ruins, we’re invited to admire the advanced urban planning, architectural ingenuity, and profound astronomical understanding that define this location. Each stone and glyph at Xpujil tells a story of innovation, resilience, and a profound connection to nature and spirituality, offering us a window into the complex worldview of the ancient Maya.
Spring Equinox Ceremony at Calakmul (Box Breakfast)
Today, we begin our journey at dawn, delving into the ancient Maya world to explore the mysteries of Calakmul. This revered site, set amidst a vast natural biosphere, offers a day of adventure and discovery. Calakmul’s iconic “Twin Pyramids” stand as a testament to the Maya’s deep understanding of universal dualities and their connection to cosmic forces, all within a rich, biodiverse setting.
Exploring Calakmul reveals the Maya’s advanced grasp of astronomy, mathematics, and the sacred cycles of time through its architecture and stelae. These ancient narratives depict a civilization deeply attuned to the celestial and terrestrial realms, living in harmony with the universe. Particularly striking are the two great temple pyramids symbolically linked by the fundamental forces of creation: Father-Mother, Masculine-Feminine, Sky-Earth, Sun-Moon, and Above-Below. This architectural feat showcases the Maya’s profound spiritual sophistication and their belief in the unity of opposites, encapsulating their profound connection to the cosmos.
We will get to witness the awe-inspiring alignment of the sun during our Spring Equinox Ceremony at Calakmul, as the Fire Serpent, Kukulkan, descends from the sky. This celestial event brings an awakening to our seven chakras and heralds the arrival of a new season.
We return to Chicanah Eco-village, enriched by the day’s insights, to reflect on the timeless lessons and spiritual legacy of the Maya.
Our day commences with an early breakfast at Chicanna Eco-village, preparing us for a deep dive into the spiritual and natural marvels of the ancient Maya at Kohunlich. Known as “The Sacred Place with the Faces of the Sun,” Kohunlich unveils the Maya’s profound respect for the sun through the grandeur of the Temple of the Masks, embodying the essence of KIN—the Maya representation of solar energy.
Enjoy a picnic lunch before returning to the ecovillage with time to relax and rejuvenate.
Today, we leave Chicanna Eco-Village and journey back towards the ocean, stopping at the historic site of Chicanna along the way. This ancient site, known as “The House of the Mouth of the Serpent,” reveals the Maya’s profound connection to the natural world and their advanced knowledge of architecture and astronomy. Here, through different levels of meditations and a deep inner transformation in their bodies, souls, and spirits, the Maya sought to reach new levels of awakening, preparing themselves to enter new celestial realms.
After exploring these ancient ruins, we transition to the serene beauty of Tucan Siho Playa, where our peaceful beachfront hotel awaits.
Enjoy a day of relaxation and leisure by the sea, including swimming, sunbathing, and beachfront activities, followed by our Sunset Closing Maya Ceremony. This ritual of gratitude and reflection allows us to express thanks to the Maya Teachers of the Light, the Guardians of the 4 Cardinal Points, and the Creators “Heart of Sky” and “Heart of the Earth” for the gifts, teachings, and protections received throughout our journey.
As the sun sets over the horizon, we are filled with a sense of fulfillment and communal appreciation, surrounded by the serene sounds of the waves. This ceremony connects us deeply with ancient wisdom and the natural world, providing a meaningful close to our transformative experiences.
Following a leisurely breakfast, take some time to unwind and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere before our departure for Merida. The drive offers a chance to reflect on our experiences before we check into our hotel and have some free time. In the afternoon, explore Merida’s bustling streets and markets for unique souvenirs, immersing yourself in the vibrant local culture and discovering treasures to commemorate your journey.
As our journey through “The Secrets of the Maya” concludes, we reflect on the profound experiences and ancient wisdom encountered. From awe-inspiring temples to sacred ceremonies, each moment deepened our connection to Maya culture. As we transfer to Merida airport and return home, may the spirit of the Maya inspire us to seek harmony with nature and the divine, echoing their timeless message: “WE ARE THE CHILDREN OF THE SUN.”
